Cookeville High sophomore guard Abby Collins netted 10 points as the Lady Cavs basketball team came up just short with a 40-39 loss to Warren County High on Tuesday night. CHS fell to 8-14 overall and 0-4 in district play. The Lady Cavs will travel to Crossville to take on Cumberland County High on Friday night at 6.

The children celebrated their day off of school for Martin Luther King Day with two games of bowling at Bowling World and lunch at Chick-fil-A. Meanwhile, the youth enjoyed laser tag, arcade games and lots more at the Family Fun Center in Crossville. Twenty-five children attended bowling and lunch while 26 youth and college students went to Crossville.

At Bowling World, Zoe Hall and Hunter Vick tied for the high score in the first game with a 108. They were the only two players over the 100 mark. Game 2 saw the kids more warmed up with several going over the 100 mark. Jackson Apple topped the scorers with a 127. Gabriel Aranda (107), Stepehn Bell (115), Nicholas Canfield (102), Connor Holmes (100), Sarah Timmerman (110) and Hunter Vick (111) all eclipsed the 100 mark.

Upward-Devoted Basketball seasons tip off

The Upward Basketball and Cheerleading and Devoted Basketball seasons tipped off Friday, January 6 and Saturday, January 7 with a full slate of games. The high school boys started the Devoted season on Friday night with three games. Saturday featured 11 hours of Upward games with two Devoted girls games following. Two Devoted junior high boys games were played on Thursday, January 12 at Avery Trace.

There was a good crowd on Friday and the gym was packed with an estimated 1,800 people coming through the Family Life Center during the weekend. Each of those folks heard about the expectations of Upward and Devoted from members of the leadership team. The following weeks will feature interactive games, skits, and devotions based upon virtues Upward players have learned through flag football, soccer and basketball.

The number of participants decreased slightly with 355 children compiling 42 Upward Basketball teams and six cheer squads. Devoted Basketball has around 100 youth making up 12 teams.

Serving each of these children, youth and their families with excellence takes the work of many faithful volunteers who are willing to do “Whatever It Takes.” These folks show Jesus’ love as they help children grow spiritually and physically while teaching them about basketball and cheerleading.

Children grow spiritually through scripture learning and devotions at practice each week. Devoted players have weekly devotions at practice. Coaches provide sports instruction to each child while also investing spiritually in each child/youth. Coaches for both leagues were asked to sign a coaches covenant conveying this commitment.

Music-Missions Winter Kickoff

The First Baptist children kicked off the New Year with a Music-Missions Kickoff on Wednesday. This football and basketball themed party featured plenty of recreation, a missions video and music. Children in grades 1-6 were split into four teams lead by youth Abby Collins, Matt Collins, Skyelar Hibbs, Courtney Hutcherson and Kylie Wade and competed in several games and relay races to win the Golden Cone. A Spirit Noodle was also awarded to the team who did the best job encouraging their players. The night started with a balloon game and progressed to a few other games before a missions video and activity with Carolyn Jernigan. Children came back into the gym and enjoyed music with Neisha Hibbs. The night conclude with relays through an obstacle course. The White Team won the Golden Cone while the Red Team captured the Spirit Noodle. Children's choirs and mission groups resume Wedensday, January 11.

Lady Cavs win tournament

Sophomore Abby Collins scored a team-high 15 points in the Cookeville Lady Cavs 40-31 win over Ponce de Leon in the semifinals of the Hilton Sandestin Beach Basketball Blowout on Thursday. CHS followed that up with a win in the championship game on Friday to move its overall record to 8-9. Abby netted four points in that contest. Meanwhile, the Upperman High boys basketball team dropped its second game in Kentucky. Freshman Ryan LaFever did not play in the contest.

The Cookeville High girls basketball team opened play in the Hilton Sandestin Beach Basketball Blowout with a 50-44 win on Tuesday. Sophomore Abby Collins netted six points in the contest as the Lady Cavs advanced to the semifinals. The Upperman High boys basketball team won its first game of a three-day tournament in Williamsburg, Kentucky 52-42. Freshman Ryan LaFever did not play in the contest.

Midsouth Classic

The Cookeville High School girls basketball team hosted the Midsouth Classic December 19-21. Sophomore guard Abby Collins, who recently moved into the starting lineup, scored nine points, grabbed four rebounds and swiped three steals in the Lady Cavs 42-39 win over Hickman County on Tuesday. Abby followed that up with four points in a tough 33-29 loss to Loretto on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Cavs dropped their final game of the Midsouth 52-37 to Maryville on Wednesday night. Abby tallied the first field goal for CHS in the contest. The Lady Cavs fell to 5-9 overall and will travel to Florida for the Hilton Sandestin Beach Basketball Blowout December 27-30.

Happy Birthday Jesus Party

The Preschool and Children's Ministry celebrated Jesus' birthday on Friday, December 9 in the Fellowship Hall and Family Life Center. Thirty-four children and 14 preschoolers participated in the Happy Birthday Jesus Party. Everyone ate a hot dog supper before activities began. Children then moved to the Chapel for a special insight of the Christmas story from Mary (Nancy Knowlton) while preschoolers went upstairs for a movie and crafts. After hearing from Mary, children split into two groups and roatated to crafts and recreation. In crafts, they decorated a birthday cake that told the story of Jesus. In recreation, they herded sheep (balloons with pool noodles) and took a census of balloons. Everyone came back together for birthday cake and ice cream, singing Happy Birthday to Jesus! Children brought a gift of diapers and/or wipes for the Cookeville Pregnancy Clinic.

Trinity Assembly started Upward Indoor Soccer this season with practices being held at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center and games being played at Prescott South Middle School. I went to Prescott today to watch some of our First Baptist kids play in their final game of the season.

The Upward Basketball and Cheerleading season officially tipped off today with a Kindergarten Clinic in the Family Life Center and Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church. Basketball players went through warmups with Lisa Reeves. They then met their coach and went through six stations -- shooting, dribbling, passing, defense, scrimmage and devotion and snacks -- with their coach. This allowed them to learn some basic skills while building a relationship with their coach. Then Lisa helped simulate a game while going over basic rules. Teams then met to hand out schedules, rosters and uniforms. Cheerleaders met their coach and went through a practice. It was a great start to the 2011-2012 season!! Pictures will be posted soon.

Basketball season starts

The high school and middle school basketball seasons have started. Cookeville High sophomore Abby Collins scored two points in the Lady Cavs 56-48 loss to Blackman on Saturday. CHS is 2-4 on the season and plays at Bradley County on Tuesday. Upperman freshman Ryan LaFever scored two points in a 81-59 win on Saturday. The Bees split their weekend games to move to 2-1 on the season. UHS travels to Gainesboro for a district game against Jackson County on Tuesday.

The First Baptist volleyball teams wrapped up their seasons on Thursday, November 10. The Youth Beginner team won the tournament while the Youth Experienced team finished second and the "C" team came in third. The Youth Beginner team fought out of the loser's bracket, playing eight games in one night to win the championship.

The Cookeville High girls soccer team defeated Cleveland 2-1 in region play to secure a spot in the sectional round. The Lady Cavs then lost 6-1 to Soddy-Daisy last Thursday, putting them on the road for a game against Siegel in the sectional. CHS' run came to an end with a loss to Siegel last Saturday. The Lady Cavs finished the season 14-6-2. Sophomore Abby Collins was named second-team all-district.

The Cookeville High girls soccer team won the District 6-AAA Tournament title with a 2-1 triumph over Warren County High in McMinnville Thursday night. The Lady Cavs won 2-1 to advance to the championship game. CHS, with sophomore Abby Collins, now hosts Cleveland High in a region contest.

The First Baptist volleyball teams made a clean sweep on Thursday night as the youth beginner team defeated Trinity B in three games, the youth experienced team beat Steven Street, and the C team defeated the River in three games. All three teams begin tournament action next Thursday.

Youth at Creation Museum

TeamKID met both Wednesdays during Fall Break with kids learning about Studying the Bible and Serving Others. The first week five kids attended and learned through Bible study and missions before wrapping up the night with a game of kickball. The second week 14 children attended. They learned about serving others from the story of Jesus washing the disciples feet. We celebrated Mrs. Ann's birthday with a trip to Dairy Queen for blizzards.

October 10-12 I accompanied the youth on a trip to Hebron, KY. We played arcade games, miniature golf and laser tag at an Adventure Center on Monday evening. On Tuesday, we toured the Creation Museum. This was quite a thought provoking, neat museum. We also spent a couple hours at a nearby mall.

The Cookeville High girls soccer team closed out the regular season with a 5-0 win over Cumberland County High on Senior Night Thurday. Sophomore Abby Collins played strong in the midfield for the Lady Cavs. CHS improved to 11-4-2 overall and 7-1 in district play. The Lady Cavs enter the district tournament as the Number 2 seed after losing a tiebreaker with Warren County. CHS begins district tournament play on Tuesday, October 18 hosting Coffee County at 7:00 p.m.

The Algood Middle Redskins closed out a perfect season with a 28-6 victory over Burks Middle School on Thursday. Eighth grade quarterback Matt Collins carried the ball 10 times for 63 yards and completed a 30-yard pass. The Redskins, who also feature Samuel Aranda and Andrew Manzaro, finished a perfect 9-0.

The Prescott South Bulldogs lost 30-12 to Avery Trace on Thursday night. Brandon Arp recovered a fumble and registered several tackles as the Bulldogs wrapped up their season. Cody Hutcherson also plays for Prescott.

It was a clean sweep for the First Baptist volleyball teams on Thursday night. The Youth Beginner team defeated Trinity B in three games. After losing the first game 21-8, FBC Orange rebounded and won the next two games 21-14, 15-9. This team, coached by Neisha and Jordan Hibbs, is 4-1 on the season. The C team beat Dodson Branch Community Church in three games. FBC Navy won the first game 21-6 before falling 21-12 but came back to take the final game 15-7. They improved to 3-2 for the season. The Youth Experienced team needed just two games to beat Stevens Street 21-12, 21-19. FBC Green moved to 3-2 on the season.

The Prescott South Bulldog football team picked up its first win in the programs short history with a 28-6 victory over Jackson County Middle School last Thursday. The game was the first home contest for Prescott and Homecoming. Eighth grader Brandon Arp was part of a Bulldogs defense that held JCMS to 116 yards of offense with 87 of those coming on one play. Cody Hutcherson also plays for Prescott.

The Algood Middle Redskins kept their perfect season intact with a 38-16 thumping of Jackson County Middle on Tuesday. Eighth grade quarterback Matt Collins rushed for 34 yards and converted a 2-point conversion. Samuel Aranda and Andrew Manzaro also play for Algood.

The Cookeville High boys cross country team won the gold divison of the Sharp Springs Invitational in Smyrna on Saturday. Nathan Nelms finished 18th with a time of 18:40 while JP Nelms was right on his heels coming in 19th with a time of 18:57. The Jr. Cavs girls team, featuring Riley Masters, finished second in their race at the Sharp Springs Invitational. Both teams are home this Saturday for the Burnett Invitational.

The Algood Middle School football team rolled over another opponent, defeating White County Middle School 28-0 on Tuesday night. Eighth grade quarterback Matt Collins scored two touchdowns, recovered a fumble and rushed for 68 yards on five carries in the win. The Redskins (7-0) go to Jackson County next Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. game.

The Cookeville High boys cross country team won the Mid-State Cross Country Association meet atCHS on Tuesday. Nathan Nelms finished fourth with a time of 19:13 while JP Nelms came in 8th posting a time of 19:50. Riley Masters ran for the Jr. Cavs girls team in an earlier race. Nathan Nelms finished 18th overall with a time of 19:18:59 while JP Nelms came in 22nd posting a time of 19:37:54. The Cookeville High girls cross country team finished second in the meet. Julianne Ray recorded a time of 27:14:94 for a 41st place finish. Riley Masters ran for the Jr. Cavs who won their meet.

Kids Rock Weekend

First Baptist Church hosted a children's choir lock-in this weekend entitled Kids Rock. The Kids Rock theme has several purposes: 1) Jesus is our Rock. 2) Our FBC kids rock (are awesome!!). 3) Kids rocking out in praise for Jesus. This weekend was all about those things with times of worship, rehearsal, recreation, signing and stomp among other things. The 4th-6th graders spent the night in the gym with several adult chaperones. During recreation, we did several relay races as teams competed for the Golden Cone. Teams also competed for the Spirit Noodle (those of you who know me understand why I used a pool noodle). The Dragon Fly Eaters led by A.J. Cochrane won the Golden Cone while the Smurfs led by Skyelar Hibbs won the Spirit Noodle. Adam Cox, Riley Masters, T.J. Timmerman and Kylie Wade also assisted with recreation during the weekend.

Our kids and youth from First Baptist Church have been busy in their respective sports. On Thursday night the Prescott Middle School Bulldogs, featuring Brandon Arp and Cody Hutcherson, just missed picking up their first victory falling 8-6 to Cornerstone. The Bulldogs play their first home game on Thursday against Jackson County. Meanwhile, the Algood Middle Redskins remained undefeated with an easy 30-8 win over Red Boiling Springs. Matt Collins scored a 37-yard touchdown. The Redskins, with Samuel Aranda and Andrew Manzaro, host White County on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Also on Thursday, the Cookeville High girls soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over Coffee County. The Lady Cavs, featuring sophomore Abby Collins, improved to 3-1 in district play and host White County on Monday night at 7:00.

On Saturday, Riley Masters ran two miles in 20.29 for the Jr. Cavs cross country team at a meet in Sparta. That time was Riley's personal best for this year. On the football field, Hunter Vick played defensive back for the Cavs in a loss as part of the Cookeville Youth Football League.

Sophomore Abby Collins played for the Lady Cavs who improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in district play. CHS played in the Chattanooga Christian School Tournament this weekend. The Prescott Middle School football team, featuring Brandon Arp and Cody Hutcherson, fell just short of their first win in school history, losing 12-8 to Celina on Thursday. The Jr. Cavs girls cross country team, featuring Riley Masters, wom first place in the Donna Tucker Memorial in Macon County last Saturday.

It was a pretty good night for the First Baptist volleyball teams as two out of three teams claimed victories last night. The "C" team defeated the River 21-18, 21-16 while the Youth Experienced team beat Life Church 21-10, 21-18. The Youth Beginner team lost its match against Trinity 21-18, 21-8. Both the youth teams are 1-1 on the season. All three teams play again next Thursday with the "C" and Youth Beginner teams playing at 6:15 p.m. and the Youth Experienced team playing at 8:30 p.m.

The Algood Redskins improved to 4-0 on the season while the Prescott Bulldogs are still looking for their first win.

The Cookeville High girls soccer team rebounded from a tough loss with a dominant 6-0 win over Cumberland County last Monday. Sophomore Abby Collins plays midfield for the Lady Cavs.

The Cookeville High boys cross country team has gotten off to an impressive start. The boys defeated 17 other teams to win the Nestle Invitational in Lafayette on August 27. Nathan Nelms finished 39th with a time of 19:31:30 while JP Nelms came in 51st with a time of 20:03:50. Riley Masters ran for the Jr. Cavs who finished second in the meet. The CHS boys came in 5th out of 29 teams in the Mid-State Cross Country Association Voyles Classic in Smyrna on Thursday. Nathan posted a time of 19:37 to come in 80th place while JP ran in 20:09 to finish 92nd.

Mini golf challenge winner

We finished the mini golf challenge yesterday at a course right across from the beach in Myrtle Beach. I beat dad by two strokes. That paired with a win at Molten Mountain Adventure Golf in North Myrtle Beach on Thursday gave me the week-long challenge championship. These last two courses didn't have spinners, but were quite challenging. Yesterday we had to climb a lot of stairs to get to the holes. Dad made a late charge with back-to-back hole in ones on the last two holes but I pulled out the victory!! This has been a great time of family fun.

Mini golf challenge

My family absolutely loves miniature golf and Myrtle Beach is full of mini golf courses. So I took it upon myself to create a family mini golf challenge for the week. We will play four to five different courses this week with the winner of each day/night's challenge having to buy dinner. Points are also awarded based on where you place each day and an overall winner will be named at the end of the week. This has made for some quite entertaining golf the last two days. The golf courses over here have spinners on certain holes where you spin and have to do whatever it says for that hole or for a shot on that hole. Yesterday for example I had to shoot with the wrong end of my club with my eyes closed. Still I prevailed as the winner yesterday but dad still has the overall lead.

Great time in Greenville

My parents and I went to see the Greenville Drive play on Saturday night in what is a minature Fenway Park. Fluor Field is the exact dimensions of Fenway except the Green Monster is a little smaller and being a minor league park fans are a bit closer to the action. We arrived for the game about an hour earlier and mom had a conversation with a guy with ties to Cookeville (small world). I was in awe of the amazing minor league field. I took a few pictures and we visited the team store for souvenirs before settling into our seats. We had seats right behind home plate!! There were several scouts sitting around us. We noticed some interesting food choices from the concession stand as people around us enjoyed mac and cheese and okra (don't think I've seen that before). The game was very entertaining and Greenville won 10-4. A very nice city and a very nice night!!

Eighth grade quarterback Matt Collins converted three 2-point conversions for the Redskins who moved to 3-0 on the season. Algood, which also includes Samuel Aranda and Andrew Manzaro, plays Prescott South on Thursday, September 1. Prescott South, featuring Brandon Arp and Cody Hutcherson, lost 36-0 to Fentress County on Thursday night to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Meanwhile, the Cookeville girls soccer team suffered a 5-2 setback to Warren County on Thursday night. The Lady Cavs, featuring sophomore Abby Collins, fell to 1-1 on the season and will travel to Cumberland County on Tuesday.

It's hard to believe it's that time of year again, but the beginning stages of Upward Basketball and Cheerleading and Devoted Basketball have begun. Upward brochures are already here!!! On Friday night, Doreen Cox, Neal and Melissa Marcum, Chris and Tara Masters, McCartney Williams and I attended Upward Leadership Training in Knoxville. This training changed this year becoming much more condensed for returning church partners but it was still a very refreshing time and as in year's past we came away with some new ideas. Stay posted for more details on what we learned at training and changes you will see this season. Of course no trip would be complete without a stop at Krisy Kreme. We also stopped off at Buddy's BBQ for a little hot fudge cake. Sugar, it's the way we make it through!! Looking forward to a fabulous 2011-2012 season!!!!

Thursday Night Lights

The Cookeville High football team kicked off their season with a 21-7 loss to Brentwood during Thursday Night Lights. A tailgate party sponsored by several area churches inlcuding First Baptist preceeded the game. Free drinks were given away and Christian music was played. During the game, junior Jacob Ryan Ramsaur played a couple times on special teams. Overall it was a great night hanging with Christian friends and interacting with some of our youth from FBC.

The Algood Redskins football team ran their way to a dominating 36-0 win over Cornerstone Middle School on Monday night in Algood. Eighth grade quarterback Matt Collins carried the ball seven times for 48 yards, scored two touchdowns and a two-point conversion and landed a key block that sprang a running back for a touchdown. He also made several stops on defense. Seventh grader Samuel Aranda also saw some action while Andrew Manzaro also plays for the Redskins. Algood improved to 2-0 on the season and will host Monterey on Thursday, August 25.

Join us at 5:00 p.m. in the CHS parking lot as First Baptist joins with other area churches for a tailgate party. Back to School Bash

Children enjoyed a great time of games, snacks and music while registering for music, missions and/or Bible Drill. Youth and adults helped get everything set up early in the afternoon from blowing up water balloons to filling up pools and getting popcorn and sno cone machines set up. The Bash started at 5:30 p.m. as kids rotated through different game stations with youth and college students leading the games. Steve Farris provided his own fishing game, then there were three water games (splish, splish, splash, water volleyball and water balloon relay) and beanbag toss. Snacks included popcorn, sno cones and watermelon. Trucks were set up with tailgates for seating. We also used our Block Rocker to have pumped up music throughout the festivities. We gathered the kids for a few songs with Neisha Hibbs leading some motions. Thank you to all who helped throughout the day to make this a fun time for everyone!!!

TeamKID wraps up for the summer

TeamKID concluded Wednesday, July 27 for the summer with a lesson on Being a Good Friend. Eighteen kids studied Barnabas' friendship with Mark from Acts 12:25-13:14; 15:36-41. In missions, they learned about the relationships that missionaries make to share Jesus with their friends. Eleven preschoolers took part in TeamKID upstairs. On Wednesday, July 20 we visited homes in Rebecca Place, sharing information about the church and taking prayer request.

Join us this Wednesday night for our Back to School Bash. We'll have snacks, water games and sports activities and you can sign up for choirs, mission groups and/or Bible Drill. Don't miss this fun time!!

Nine children and four adults explored the Ministers Treehouse in Crossville, TN today. We climbed through the 10 story treehouse with several kids getting to the top to ring the bell along with Ann Hertzfeldt and Carolyn Jernigan. After exploring the treehouse, we went to lunch at Dairy Queen and then came back and enjoyed time in the gym. The final Terrific Tuesday of the summer is next Tuesday at Gilley Pool. This week at Centri-KID was absolutely amazing. Words fail to describe all that I experienced personally and all that we experienced as a group. Each of our 14 campers had fun with track times, recreation, parties and especially OMC!!. But more importantly they learned more about Christ and grew in their walk with Him through Bible study and worship and seeing Christ modeled for them through the Centri-KID staff. On Thursday night I had each of our campers write down their favorite things about camp. One could be fun (OMC) and another spiritual. Many of our kids wrote about worship and specifically the song Our God. I must say it blessed my heart tremendously to watch these kids worship our Lord. It was also a very refreshing time for us as counselors.

Our group was part of more than 720 folks from 29 churches at Centri-KID in Anderson, SC this week. Together these churches gave more than $4,000 towards missions through the missions offering. Several children made decisions during the week. The theme for this year was Shipwreck Island: Where God Provides. We learned that God provides forgiveness, calling, enough, and through me. Yesterday kids were challenged to shine their light for Christ every day. Each camper was given and after camp devotional book so they could continue to have quiet time with God. Parents please encourage your kids to do this or do it with them. Thank you for letting your kids go with us this week! As you can see, Thursday was a busy day with OMC and the Variety Show changing the schedule up a bit. Campers didn't miss any of the normal activities other than the party. Once again we enjoyed an amazing time of worship with Pastor Wes speaking about God providing enough. We talked about that a bit more in church group devotion then wrote down our high points both spiritually and otherwise. We have Bible study and a closing celebration to close out Centri-KID tomorrow. Pray for us as we travel home.

Tonight instead of a party we had a variety show where all the performance tracks showed what they had learned throughout the week. John Herberman performed as part of the Footpraise track while Jordan Glass had a role for Drama and Cheernastics and Lily Masters also cheered for Cheernastics.

Money for missions

During Hang Time today, I had two huge buckets of water dumped on me. Jacob Libbey paid $20 for the two buckets with the money going toward missions. The missions offering goes to help Current Canada, a summer missions program that allows students who have completed the 11th grade or higher to experience hands-on ministry in remote areas of Canada where there is little to no evangelical presence. The goal is to see 1,000 Southern Baptist churches planted in Canada by 2020. They currently have 250 churches. Our group collected $57 for the missions offering along with Jacob's money he paid to soak me.

Today was OMC at Centri-KID!!!! OMC stands for Organized Mass Chaos and it is just that. Every camper competes for their color by completing task cards. Every player is trying to complete a different task, but the biggest rule of the game is that you can't say "no" so everytime a camper asks another for help, they must stop their task and help. After a camper completes the task, they drop it into their team's colored bucket and get another task card from the numbered flag indicated on their completed card. The team with the most task cards in their bucket wins! While adults don't complete cards, they still help with tasks, take pictures and can get very messy. None of our adults got messy but we did get a little wet. The Yellow team (3rd grade) won for best cheer while the Red team (6th grade) won OMC!!!

Wednesday at Centri-KID

Today was another full day at Centri-KID with I Can't Wait, Bible study and recreation, track times, hang time, worship, church group devotion and Party. You'll see some pictures from recreation and track times. Cameras aren't allowed in worship but it has been awesome to listen and watch our kids praise the Lord!! Today in Bible study they learned about God providing a calling and the sermon focused on us using our gifts, talents and abilities to be a light for Christ. We further unpacked that in church group devotion time. Then it was back for Party. During the party, kids participate in different games on stage to earn points for their Bible study color and to try to win the oar. Tomorrow is OMC!!!! More on exactly what that is tomorrow.

First full day at Centri-KID

Today was our first full day at Centri-KID camp and it has been jam packed. This morning began with quiet time and then an opening rally called I Can't Wait. From there, the kids went to Bible study and recreation while the adults enjoyed a time of worship centered on the Holy Spirit. After lunch our campers went to their track times and had some hang time. Tonight we enjoyed a fabulous time of worship (it's great to see our kids praising the Lord) with a message centered on God providing forgiveness. We then had a church group time where we unpacked the day and talked about God's forgiveness for non-believers and believers and how He calls believers to a life of freedom. Then it was Party time. The kids enjoyed being down front and cheering for their respective teams (will explain in later post).

The Centri-KID group arrived at Anderson University several hours ago. The kids have enjoyed an opening celebration and Bible study and are now preparing for the Party before enjoying some free time. Kids learn to pray in TeamKID

Nine children in 1st-6th grade learned to pray during TeamKID last night. The Bible study centered on the Lord's prayer from Matthew 6:5-13 with activity pages reinforcing those passages and showing kids places they can pray while encouraging them to write a letter to God. Games had kids play a form of dodge ball while spelling prayer and racing to get plates with parts of the verse written on them and piece together the scripture verse. TeamKID will not meet next Wednesday but will resume on July 20.

There was a smaller crowd for TeamKID on Wednesday night, but nine children learned the importance of Being Happy When Others Succeed. The Bible study centered on Saul's envy of David in I Samuel 18:1-14. Recreation used games that focused on sportsmanship and encouraging others. In missions, kids heard the story of an IMB missionary and worked on encouraging greetings for other missionaries. TeamKID will meet again this Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. We will not meet on July 13.

Children explored the big city during Big Apple Adventure Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Church June 20-24. Through worship rally, Bible study, music, crafts, snacks, missions and recreation kids learned how to step out in faith and connect with Jesus - sharing the message of Christ in their world. Children learned to connect with faith, love, trust, others and life. Ten children made a decision for Christ as the gospel was presented by Bro. Randy on Thursday. An average of 144 kids attended VBS with a high of 152. More than 100 adults and youth were involved as leaders. More than $1,000 dollars was collected as part of the missions offering. That offering will go to help a church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama as well as to children's programs overseas. Youth also met each night for VBS. Their theme was InTransit and lessons focused on faith and healing, forgiveness and love, belief and salvation, everyday and eternal and life and obedience. An average of 42 youth and leaders attended each night.

Terrific Tuesday took us to Chuckles Family Fun Center in Crossville today. Thirteen children and three adults enjoyed arcade, laser tag, miniature golf and go-karts. About 130 children enjoyed a day full of worship, Bible study, crafts, missions, recreation and snacks. All these activities taught kids how to Connect with Faith. TeamKIDs were scheduled to go out last night and invite other kids to join us for Vacation Bible School next week. But with the stormy weather, we instead stayed in the gym and learned about telling others about Jesus. Fifteen kids stayed and learned about Paul witnessing to King Agrippa (Acts 25-26). Once again kids sang the ABC song and went over the ABCs of becoming a Christian. Activity pages helped apply what had been learned. During reach out time, children watched a video encouraging them that they could tell other people about Jesus anytime and anywhere. In recreation, kids played a soccer-type game where they could only pass the ball while standing on a paper of their team's color.

Terrific Tuesday moved indoors today with bowling and lunch at Chick-fil-A. Fourteen kids and six adults took to the lanes for two games of bowling. Some also enjoyed the arcade for a while as they waited for others to finish. Cody Hutcherson posted the high score for both games, rolling a 123 in the first game and a 137 in the second game. McCartney Williams posted games of 121 and 135 while Colleen Cox rolled a 109 and 132. Others with scores of 100 or better were Bethany Timmerman (117), Carly Williams (103), Riley Masters (105), Sally Jane Marcum (126), John Herberman (102) and David Herberman (108). After bowling, the group headed to Chick-fil-A for lunch before coming back to the church. There won't be a Terrific Tuesday next week due to Vacation Bible School. Terrific Tuesday will resume on Tuesday, June 28 with a trip to Chuckles in Crossville.

Hunter Vick singled and scored a run while playing centerfield and second base for the 11-year-old Jere Whitson All-Stars in an 8-3 loss to Baxter on Thursday. Nicholas McCloud and Brett Turbeville pitched while Patick McCloud played catcher for the 9-year-old Parkview All-Stars in a 13-0 loss to Algood on Thursday. Cody Hutcherson smashed a homerun for the 12-year-old Jere Whitson All-Stars on Friday to help his team advance to the championship game.

Cookeville High senior Courtney Hutcherson earned District 6-AAA All-District recognition recently. Courntey tallied a .350 batting average and .470 on base percentage while scoring 31 runs and smacking 13 doubles and three triples as a leadoff batter. She also anchored the defense at shortstop. Courtney will continue her softball career at Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tennessee.

Bible Study

Children learned about accepting others who are different during the second week of TeamKID on Wednesday night. The Bible story focused on Acts 10 where Peter meets Cornelius. Kids studied several verses from Acts 10 and discussed the definitions of favoritism and discrimination to understand that God loves each of us. They also learned the ABC song. In missions, children learned about different types of churches and styles of worship and designed invitations to church to meet the needs of various people. During recreation kids played different games that emphasized how God loves each of his children equally as much and desires for all people to love on another and accept one another's differences.

Terrific Tuesday - Gilley Pool

Terrific Tuesdays started with a trip to Gilley Pool on Tuesday. Forty-four children and adults enjoyed a day of swimming, water fun, lunch and fellowship. Gilley Pool in McMinnville features spray cannons, buckets and other water and spray features along with water slides for children and adults, swimming lanes and a diving area with low, medium and high diving boards. First Baptist will take two more Terrific Tuesday trips to Gilley Pool July 5 and July 26.

Terrific Tuesdays features a different activity for children in K-6th grade most Tuesdays throughout the summer. Next Tuesday (June 14) we will go to Bowling World for a couple games of bowling and then eat lunch at Chick-fil-A. The cost is $6 for bowling.

Babe Ruth action

The Babe Ruth Braves and Babe Ruth Astros played to a 2-2 tie on Thursday night at Parkview. Ryan LaFever pitched for the Braves, giving up two runs on six hits while hitting three batters, walking one intentionally and striking out six over five innings. McCartney Williams pitched two pitches in the bottom of the fifth, completing a strikeout. Ryan walked and scored the game-tying run in the fourth inning.

In the later game, the Tar Heels thumped the Yankees 8-0. Gray Forrester played left field for the Tar Heels while Matthew Collins roamed centerfield for the Yankees.

Hutcherson signs with Walters State

Cookeville High's Courtney Hutcherson accepted a softball scholarship from Walters State Community College. She recently signed her committment papers for WSCC, which is located in Morristown, Tennessee. Courtney could possibly play third base for the Lady Senators, who finished 40-13 this season. As a shortsop who batted leadoff for the Lady Cavs, Courtney amassed a .350 batting average and .470 on-base percentage. She slammed 13 doubles, three triples and a home run while driving in 12 runs and scoring 31. CHS made its first region appearance since 1999.

TeamKID kicked off for the summer last night. This fun, high-energy ministry that encourages kids to know Jesus Christ and to grow in relationship with Him, meets every Wednesday night throughout the summer except during the week of Vacation Bible School. Last night 13 children in 1st-6th grade learned about getting along with family members. Using the story of Jacob and Esau, kids recognized that families in the Bible also struggled to get along and discussed ways to promote peace when possible.Children rotated through Bible study and scripture memorization time with Ann Hertzfeldt, missions with Lou Ann Herberman and recreation with Colleen Cox learning ways to get along with family members.

This summer's TeamKID theme is Jumping the Hurdles. This fouces on helping children deal with issues that may cause them problems in life. Each week we'll focus on a different "hurdle" and help develop skills for children to succeed in jumping those hurdles.

Preschoolers (3-5 year olds) also meet for TeamKID each Wednesday nights during the summer. They meet on the second floor. Shannan Bradley and Kristy Gunter are leading that group. Nine preschoolers participated this week.

Youth volleyball team finishes second

The Youth Experienced volleyball team came in second place in the tournament which concluded on May 19. The youth fell into the loser's bracket after a loss to Copeland's Chapel. But they rebounded to win their next match and advace to the championship game, where they again played Copeland's Chapel. FBC came up on the short end once again, but finished a strong season with a second place showing. Team members are Chris Bernstein, Adam Cox, Krissi Cox, Victoria Emrich, Jayron Fransico, Annie McNelly, Ivan Overstreet, Danielle Sutton, Tradonna Sutton, Kylie Wade and Brittany Wright. The team is coached by Kristy McCloud and Kim Emrich.

Williams named all-district

Monterey High sophomore McCartney Williams was named to the All-District 7-A team. Mac played second base, catcher and outfield and served as a designated hitter. He amassed a .358 batting average, scored 18 runs and knocked in 11. He tallied a .596 on base percentage, walking 11 times while getting hit by a pitch 14 times. Mac was also named the Most Improved Player for the Wildcats.

The First Baptist co-ed softball team lost 10-8 to Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church on Monday night at Cane Creek. Seventeen players saw action in the contest. FBC (2-6) gets a break for Memorial Day and then returns to action on June 6 with games at 7:00 & 8:00 p.m.

The Babe Ruth season started up at Parkview last week. Matthew Collins, Hayden Dronebarger, Gray Forrester, Ryan LaFever and Mac Williams represent First Baptist.

Monday was a tough day for several of our First Baptist athletes as the Cookeville High softball and baseball and Monterey High baseball teams all lost in region tournament play. The Lady Cavs suffered a 10-0 defeat against defending state champion Soddy-Daisy in the Region 3-AAA Tournament. Senior Courtney Hutcherson reached base after getting hit by a pitch and stole a base. She wrapped up a great senior season in which she helped guide CHS to its first region appearance since 1999. Freshman Abby Collins concluded a freshman year in which she played three varsity sports -- soccer, basketball and softball. The Lady Cavs finished the season with a 21-19 record.

The Monterey Wildcats mustered just two hits in an 11-0 setback to Friendship Christian in the Region 4-A Tournament. Mac Williams concluded his sophomore season for the Wildcats who finished with a 9-15 record. The Cookeville Cavs lost 10-6 to Walker Valley in the Region 3-AAA Tournament. Pitcher Phillip Alcorn wrapped up his junior season. The Cavs finished the season 27-5-1.

The First Baptist beginner youth volleyball team played the maximum number of games in finishing second in the year end tournament last night. FBC defeated Vine Branch in three games. After losing the first game, FBC fought back to take the last two. FBC then played Stevens Street for the championship, losing in five games. The team consist of mostly seventh graders, a couple fifth graders and one sophomore. Team members are Lucas Hall, Madeline Hall, Christian Herberman, Skyelar Hibbs, Maddie Loveday, Jacob Ryan Ramsaur, Maddie Ramsaur, Olivia Turbeville, Brandon Wright and Brooklyn Wright. The team is coached by Neisha Hibbs and Colleen Cox and assisted by Jordan Hibbs and Jacob Ramsaur.

The First Baptist experienced youth volleyball team advanced on in the winner's bracket with a two game win last night. They will play again next week.

The Cookeville High softball team lost 4-2 to Coffee County in the championship game of the District 6-AAA Tournament on Wednesday at White County High School. Senior Courtney Hutcherson singled and scored. Despite the loss, the Lady Cavs (21-18) advance to the region tournament where they'll play Soddy-Daisy on Monday.

The Monterey High baseball team routed Pickett County High 11-1 to advance to the District 7-A Tournament championship game on Wednesday night. That championship didn't go as well as the Wildcats fell 18-8 to Jackson County High. Mac Williams lined a single up the middle against Pickett County. MHS (9-13) moves on the region tournament where it will play Friendship Christian Monday night at 7:00 in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Nathan Nelms qualified for the Class AAA sectional track meet as he was part of the 4x800 relay team that finished second with a time of 8:40.76 in the sub-sectional meet at Walker Valley on Monday.

The Cookeville High baseball team, featuring junior pitcher Phillip Alcorn and coach Josh Bayless, advanced to the District 6-AAA Tournament championship game with a 9-1 win over White County High on Monday night. The Cavs (27-3-1) host the championship contest Thursday night at 6:00.

The Monterey High baseball team dominated Clarkrange 11-0 in the District 7-A Tournament on Monday. Sophomore McCartney Williams contributed to the offensive onslaught. The Wildcats (8-11) play Jackson County High tonight at 7:00.

Seniors Matthew Sliger and B.J. Wood saw their high school lacrosse careers come to an end with a 17-4 loss to Ensworth in the TSLA playoffs on Monday.

FBC co-ed softball drops doubleheader

The First Baptist Church co-ed softball team suffered two losses to Dodson Branch Community Church on Monday night. In the first game, FBC scored a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 4. But Dodson Branch plated two runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory. The second game wasn't as close as Dodson Branch took a 10-2 victory. Annie McNelly made her season debut playing outfield in the first game and catcher in the second contest. FBC plays again Monday, May 16 at 6:00 and 7:00 p.m.

With spring sports winding down, the weekend proved to be a busy one for several of our First Baptist athletes. On Thursday night, the youth beginner volleyball team lost a tough match in three games to Steven Street Baptist. After losing the first game, FBC battled back and won the second game. The third game went down to the wire with Steven Street pulling out a 15-13 victory. Both FBC volleyball teams play again this Thursday with the youth beginner team looking to fight its way out of the loser's brakcet and into the championship game.

Also on Thursday, the Cookeville High boys track team won the District 6-AAA meet. Nathan Nelms finished third in the 400-meter run with a time of 57.29 seconds. He was also part of the 4x400 realy team that posted a time of 4:04 to come in third. The Cornerstone baseball team routed Jackson County 10-0 on Thursday. Eighth grader Ryan LaFever tripled, drove in two runs and scored in the game.

Courtney Hutcherson

Ryan saw his middle school baseball career come to an end on Friday with a 14-0 win over Jackson County. He blooped a single, smashed a triple, walked, hit a sacrifice fly, scored four runs and knocked in three. Ryan also pitched the final inning, putting two runners on with a walk and a hit batsman before closing out the game.

The Algood Middle School soccer team defeated Overton County 7-1 in a tournament at the Soccer Complex on Friday. Matthew Collins and Samuel Aranda played midfield and defense. Algood lost to Avery Trace in the championship game of the tournament on Saturday night.

The Cookeville High softball team began district tournament play on Friday with a 3-1 win over Cumberland County High. Senior Courtney Hutcherson tripled and scored a run while freshman Abby Collins scored a run in the game. The Lady Cavs lost 8-1 to top-seed Coffee County on Saturday. Courtney slammed two doubles and a triple and walked in the game. Abby served as a courtsey runner. CHS plays again tonight at White County High School.

On Wednesday, the Monterey High baseball team clinched a tie for second place in the district with a 7-5 win over Clay County High. Mac Williams collected two hits and drove in three runs for the Wildcats.

Riley Masters

The Junior Cav girls lacrosse team saw great improvement in two games on Saturday. In the first contest, the Junior Cavs lost 12-2 to a team from Knoxville. But in their second game against Hendersonville, they scored seven goals in a 14-7 loss. Riley Masters made her debut at goalie, playing there for the entire first game and the second half of the second game. In the second contest, the Junior Cavs played to a 7-7 tie in the second half. Riley played midfield during the first half of that game.

The Cornerstone Middle School baseball team found this to be a tough weekend, suffering losses to Overton County and Algood in the Algood Middle School Tournament. Eighth grader Ryan LaFever pitched the complete game against Algood, suffering the loss after giving up three runs. He reached base twice with an intentional walk and a single. The Yellow Jackets (16-3) have two school-day games with Jackson County this week.

The Monterey High baseball team got the offense rolling in a 15-3 win over Watertown on Thursday night. Sophomore Mac Williams smacked a hit in the contest. The Wildcats host Clay County High in their district finale tomorrow at 2 p.m.

The Cookeville High softball team found itself on the wrong end of a close contest, falling 3-2 to White County High on Thursday night. Senior Courtney Hutcherson played in what likely was her last home contest, advancing a runner on a groundout in the last inning. Freshman Abby Collins came in as a pinch runner and stole a base. The Lady Cavs play Smith County on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in Carthage.

The First Baptist youth volleyball teams both won their first-round tournament matches in two games on Thursday night. The Beginner Youth team plays next Thursday at 8:15 p.m. while the Youth Experienced team plays again on May 12.

The Cookeville High softball team picked up a key district win, defeating Warren County High 5-2 on Monday night. Senior Courtney Hutcherson reached on an error and scored a run while also fielding a sharp grounder at short to record the second out in the final inning. Freshman courtesy runner Abby Collins also scored a run. The Lady Cavs (18-14) host White County High in another important district contest on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

The Cornerstone Middle School Yellow Jackets beat Algood Middle School 3-0 on Monday. Eighth grader Ryan LaFever pitched the complete game shutout. CMS (16-2) will play in a tournament in Algood this weekend.

The First Baptist co-ed softball team picked up its first wins of the season, sweeping a doubleheader against Cookeville Nazarene. The bats finally came alive for FBC and the defense played well in the win.

The Cookeville High baseball team went undefeated in tournament play in Oak Ridge this weekend, defeating Knox Central, Cocke County, Buckeye (Ohio) and Oak Ridge. Junior Phillip Alcorn tossed 2/3 of an inning and allowed two runs in the win over Oak Ridge. Phillip threw a scoreless inning and struck out two in an 11-1 win over Buckeye. The Cavs (21-3-1) play Lebanon tonight at 6:00 p.m.

The Cookeville High softball team compiled a 4-3 record this weekend beating Smyrna, Eagleville, Tullahoma and Cascade while losing to former district foes Oakland, Siegel and Blackman. Senior Courntey Hutcherson put together a great weekend at the plate. She drove in a run and scored a run in the win over Cascade, smashed an RBI double and scored against Tullahoma, singled and scored versuses Siegel, scored twice against Eagleville, smacked a single and scored a run against Oakland, and got a base hit and crossed the plate twice in the Smyrna game. The Lady Cavs (17-14) host Warren County today at 4:30 p.m.

Courtney, a senior leadoff hitter, lined three singles and smashed a triple in a perfect night at the plate. She also scored twice and knocked in a run in the contest. Freshman courtesy runner Abby Collins scored twice. The Lady Cavs (13-11) are playing in a tournament at Oakland High School in Murfreesboro this weekend.

The Monterey High baseball team got back on the winning track with a 10-0 victory over Red Boiling Springs on Thursday. Mac Williams smacked a hit in the contest. The Wildcats improved to 5-10 on the season.

The Cookeville High softball team suffered a disappointing 6-5 loss to White County High on Monday night in Sparta. Senior Courtney Hutcherson singled, stole a base and scored a run in the contest. The Lady Cavs, also featuring freshman Abby Collins, fell to 12-10 overall on the season and host Cumberland County High tomorrow night.

The Cookeville High boys lacrosse team, with seniors Matt Sliger and B.J. Wood and sophomore Tucker Wood, lost 10-6 to Webb Knoxville on Monady night in Knoxville. The Cavs (6-4) play Webb Bell Buckle today at 4:30 p.m.

The Monterey High baseball team (4-9), featuring sophomore McCartney Williams, suffered a 14-0 loss to Jackson County High on Monday night in Monterey. The two teams square off again tonight in Gainesboro.

The Cornerstone Middle School baseball team pulled out a 2-1 win over Friendship Christian on Monday. Eighth grader Ryan LaFever pitched the first four innings and left with the game tied at 1. He also had a hit in the contest. The Yellow Jackets, who have lost just one game this season, host Hermitage Springs today at 5:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the First Baptist co-ed softball team struggled through a rough night, losing a doubleheader to Doyle United Methodist Church 15-4 and 20-3. Sara Hall made her softball debut in right field.

Hutcherson leads Lady Cavs to win

Senior Courtney Hutcherson provided plenty of offense for the Cookeville High Lady Cavs in their 8-1 win over Obion County on Thursday. Courtney was 3-for-4 at the plate finishing a triple short of the cycle. She knocked in three runs and scored three runs, blasting a home run.

Sophomore Nathan Nelms was part of the Cookeville High 3,200-meter relay team that won first, running a time of 8:32. Cookeville's boys won the meet on Thursday while the girls finished third.

The Youth Beginner team won its match in two games to finish with a 5-2 overall record. Both teams begin tournament play on Thursday, April 28.

The rain couldn't stop the First Baptist co-ed softball team from returning to the field at Cane Creek Sportsplex last night. Playing in their first game since 2008, FBC started out well before the bats went silent in a 12-2 loss to Brotherton Missionary Baptist last night. Heavy rain canceled the second game. The night featured plenty of rain and lightning but the team enjoyed a good time in their return to the field. Seven players from the 2008 team returned for this season to combine with five youth/college students and some new adults to the team. Kylie Wade reached base twice in her softball debut and scored a run. Chris Masters also got on base twice. Jacob Ramsaur scored the teams other run as Colleen Cox, playing for the first time in four years, lined a RBI single up the middle.
